Tips on Sharing the Road with 18-Wheeler Trucks

There are many people that have horror stories about being on the road with 18-wheeler trucks. However, you may not realize that you, the driver may be the cause of the incident. It is remarkably different and more difficult to maneuver a truck than it is the average car. As everyday drivers, we must learn to share the road with truck drivers to keep everyone safe.

That’s why we have compiled a list of helpful tips for road sharing with 18-wheeler trucks.

Do not ride in the truck’s blind spot. The worst thing that can happen is being in the truck’s blind spot. There are huge blind spots on the right and rear areas of the truck. Additional blind spots are on the front right corner and mid-left side of the truck. Be mindful that the driver can’t see you. Don’t cruise along in blind spots.

Try not to cut the truck off.  It takes a truck three times the distance of a regular vehicle to stop. Do not move into a small gap in front of the truck or get in front of the truck then brake to make a turn. Braking and cutting off the driver will put your life and the lives of others in danger.

Be careful when passing a truck. Your vehicle is vastly smaller than the truck which puts you at risk while driving alongside the truck. Because the truck drivers can’t always see you, pass the truck quickly and carefully. If you can see the trucks mirrors, then the driver can see you. Try to stay in the mirrors when passing.

Provide the driver with lane changing assistance.  It isn’t easy for a 22-foot tractor, and 48-foot trailer to merge into traffic. If a truck has the turn signal on give the driver room for changing lanes or for merging into traffic.  To indicate your willingness to cooperate, flash your lights.

Be patient with reversing trucks. It takes a lot of time and concentration for a truck driver to back up a 48-foot trailer without hitting anyone or anything. Often times, it takes a few attempts to safely reverse a truck. Just stay calm and allow the truck driver to do his/her job.
